What I ended up doing is:

doing an lpfilter -f fdpost -F fdpost.fd
next I edited the config file in /etc/lp/printers/<printer name> and
changed the content type to any. Oh, I also set some enviromental
variables such as TGROFF and TCAT as Tim Carlson suggested. Although I'm
not positively sure if the latter helped I'll have to see. But anyway
