Forwarding up my own message, see SunSolve FAQ 2217.
(Dated 9/12/97 no less)

Cachefs on 2.5 and 2.5.1 cannot work with NFS version 3 exports
on 2.6 due to the 64 bit file offsets. You need to mount those
systems with the vers=2 option on the cachefs options field.

Hopefully sun will come out with a patch for 2.5/2.5.1 to work with
this problem.
